There was once a boy named Bob who was always melancholy. His parents couldn’t get a smile out of him ever since he was a baby. They hired a clown to try to make him laugh with the funniest jokes in the world, but it only made him frown.
All his friends – Margaret, Henry, Peter, Steve and Susan were all moody, mean and horrid. But one day, his friends and parents decided to throw him a surprise party for his 10th birthday.
Meanwhile, Bob was walking home from school, unaware of what was going to happen. A few minutes later, Bob arrived at his house. He heaved a sigh and walked inside. “Surprise!” Bob was so shocked that he blinked to see if he was at the right house. In front of him, he saw multi-coloured balloons, a 3-tiered birthday cake and some wrapped presents on the dining table next to the cake. He saw his aunties, uncles and cousins. He even saw his mean friends – Margaret, Henry, Peter, Steve and Susan wearing party hats and looking bored. His parents ran up to him and gave him a big, gigantic hug. Instantly a small was beginning to form and his eyes lit up with happiness.
When everybody saw his face, they were astonished. His parents were over the moon and glad to see their son smile for the very first time. Well, except his moody friends.
