At Mathstar, we believe in bringing the best mathematics education to our students. That’s why we believe in the Singapore Maths approach of teaching maths through the 3-step learning process – concrete, pictorial and abstract.
In the concrete stage, students are introduced to the concept with hands-on learning experiences using concrete objects such as counters and paper-clips. This is followed by the pictorial step, which uses bar models to represent numbers and concepts. Eventually, students are able to solve mathematical problems in an abstract way using numbers and symbols.
Singapore Maths became more widely known after topping the Trends in International Mathematical and Science Study (TIMSS) for fourth and eighth grade mathematics.
Compared to the Australian curriculum, Singapore Maths focuses on fewer topics but covers them in greater depth. Singapore Math textbooks build upon prior knowledge and skills, with students mastering them before moving on to the next level. By the end of Grade 6, students who have studied the Singapore Maths workbooks have mastered multiplication and division of fractions and can solve difficult multi-step word problems – which will prepare them for higher level maths in their secondary schooling.
Since Mathstar was established in 2013, we have used Singapore Maths workbooks with all our primary-school-aged students and the results speak for themselves. Not only do students accurately process arithmetic operations, they have the critical thinking skills to apply the correct operation to solve a variety of mathematical problems.
